There’s no denying - Korean people LOVE festivals. From the moment the calendar turns ‘spring’ almost every weekend there will be some kind of a marathon, festival or event. We love festivals too, so here is our top most unique (or maybe the most fun?;) ) festivals in Korea! How many of these do you know?
1️⃣Daegu Chimaek Festival 🍗
Food would be one of the few things Koreans would value over a good festival gathering. Well, in Daegu you can enjoy both! Chimaek means chicken + beer (maekchu), one of the well-loved food combinations in Korea, and Daegu has a whole festival dedicated just to it. This yearly festival includes EDM performances, events and of course a TON of Chimaek!
2024 dates: July 3 ~July 7
2️⃣ Seoul Space Out Competition (ended) 💤
If you are the one to always have been scolded for spacing out during a class or a conversation - it’s your time to shine! Every year Seoul City hosts a huge competition where all you have to do is sit on the lawn and space out, with the winner chosen out of the top-10 participants by the stability of their heart. This year a famous Korean YouTuber Mimiminu, former national team short track speed skater KwakYoon-gy, and a K-pop girl group "Billie" member Tsuki also decided to participate!
3️⃣ Boryeong Mud Festival 🌚
The dirtiest (or shall we say the muddiest?) festival in the world! Boryeong has numerous mudflats rich in minerals, so every year thousands of people gather at Daecheon Beach to get muddy! The festivals includes various mud challenges as well as fun water activities.
2024 dates: July 19th~August 4th
🔥 This year Funday will be holding some Mud Fest activities, so stay in touch with us through the official Boryeong Mud Festival Instagram!
Muji is a natural firefly and marsh snails (firefly food) habitat, and also a home to the Firefly Festival! People come to Muji every fall to enjoy thousands of little sparkling fireflies at night, as well different festival activities!
2024 dates: Fall (to be announced)
5️⃣ Hwacheon Tomato Festival 🍅
Ever heard of Spanish LaTomatina? Well, here is the Hwacheon version of it with a little bit of Korean ✨spice✨. The festival is over 20 years old and it includes a yearly tomato fight as well as different competitions, food promotions and races where you have to look for golden rings in a huge tomato pool. How about a tomato lemonade?
2024 dates: August (to be announced)
